The Prototype in this photo actually was made from scratch in the back of a garage. All springs and gears made from scratch with a drill press and a grinder. No drawings, no measurements, no direction and often no light at the end of the tunnel. Nothing but imagination. Parts from all types of  things including a hose clamp, utility knife, grill, stethoscope, and an air conditioner where used among other things, It was born out of necessity and took 4 years to build. From dust was created the first fishing reel to allow casting from either side of the spool as a method of balancing the line to keep it straight. It has a 4.8:1 gear ratio, a drag system, holds about 200 yrds of 20 lb mono, and it works.
